Waterloo region will soon have more affordable housing units, as the provincial and federal governments have put $8.4 million towards affordable housing.

Part of the funding will go towards KW Habilitation, developing 22 affordable housing units for people living with developmental disabilities at 108 Sydney St. S. in Kitchener.

“Affordable housing is a great need for many in our city and region,” said Ann Bilodeau, executive director of KW Habilitation, in a release.

“KW Habilitation is very excited to be building accessible units that will create an intentional community of neighbours helping neighbours.”

71 affordable housing units

Funding will also go towards five other affordable housing projects in the region, which will create a total of 71 affordable housing units in the region:

• MennoHomes in Elmira received more than $1.7 million in funding that will go towards developing 14 affordable housing units.
• Elmira Developmental Support Corporation in Elmira received $775,423 towards six affordable housing units for people with developmental disabilities.
• Supportive Housing of Waterloo received more than $1.1 million for the development of nine affordable housing units.
• Young Women’s Christian Association of Kitchener-Waterloo received over $450,000 in funding towards four affordable housing units.
• 430 Connaught Street in Kitchener received over $1.8 million for the development of 16  affordable housing unites for persons with disabilities.

“Investing in these facilities builds on Ontario’s long-term commitment to stable funding that will transform our housing system,” said Kitchener Centre MPP Daiene Vernile, in a release.

“Providing more affordable housing will strengthen our community, as people receive the supports they need to thrive.”
